Building a Community to Live Stronger

Updated: May 18, 2023

The saying “it takes a village” conveys the message that it takes more than one person to make sure families have the care and resources they need during a meaningful change in their lives. And for generations, the YMCA has been the “village” in and across communities because of its commitment to strengthen, empower and inspire action.

A meaningful example is through The Livestrong Program at the YMCA at the Athenaeum, a program that helps cancer survivors get back on their feet in a safe and supportive environment.

The free 12-week program is specifically designed to help cancer patients and survivors reclaim their lives by participating in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. Class leaders are extensively trained and tested. Results are measured.

According to Sherry, a cancer survivor who completed the LIVESTRONG program, “LIVESTRONG is the best thing that happened to me. I feel like a whole new person. It’s such a wonderful program, and you create friendships that last after the class is done.”

While the LIVESTRONG program runs successfully at several YMCAs in Indianapolis, the program was recently established at the YMCA at the Athenaeum. ParkIndy and its mobile payment partner ParkMobile are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the “village” by contributing funds to support the LIVESTRONG Program at the YMCA at the Athenaeum, which allowed them to offer the program at no cost to 100 participants in 2018 and 2021.
